June has been declared National Safety Month by the National Safety Council (NSC). Thousands of organizations across the nation use this observance to highlight the leading causes of serious injuries or death in many facets of our lives.

With this in mind, attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain visited KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa on June 13th to discuss playground safety. During the segment, he offered advice to help keep our children safe. Watch the video:

Know the Facts

According to NSC figures, over 200,000 children in the U.S. aged 14 and under visit emergency rooms every year due to injuries associated with playground equipment. More than 20,000 of these children receive treatment for concussion or other forms of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Close to 80% of playground injuries result from falls, while 45% of all playground-related injuries are associated with inadequate supervision.

Watch for Hazards

To avoid injury, parents should keep their children away from playground areas with non-impact-absorbing surfaces, including asphalt, concrete, grass, dirt, or gravel. Look for sand, pea gravel, wood chips, mulch, or shredded rubber instead.

For more information on what to avoid, the NSC has listed a number of other potential playground hazards here.

Keep Kids Safe

While active parental supervision is the most important factor in keeping children safe, Safe Kids Worldwide has also released a list of other helpful tips parents can use to help their kids avoid common playground injuries. These include:

  • Avoiding drawstring pants, hoodies, or other loose strings on clothing
  • Teaching children to avoid pushing, shoving, or crowding
  • Making sure children wear closed shoes on the playground
  • Teaching children the rules of basic playground etiquette
