In the third verdict to conclude that Roundup® Weed Killer causes cancer, a jury in Alameda County, California has ordered Monsanto—the product’s manufacturer—to pay $2 billion to a Northern California couple suffering from Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. A detailed article on this landmark verdict is available here.

The Verdict

The jury ordered Monsanto, acquired last year by Bayer A.G., to pay a 76-year-old man and his 74-year-old wife billion in damages.

Both were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma after using Roundup on their Northern California property for decades. The jury determined that Monsanto failed to warn customers of the product’s health risks.

When the jury decided that Roundup caused the couple’s cancer, the couple’s attorney stated that the substantial judgment sends Monsanto a message. Another lawyer for the pair said homeowners were at greater risk than professionals since they were never advised to wear protective gear.

About Roundup

Glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup—is the most widely used weed killer in the world. While Monsanto continues to maintain that Roundup is safe, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers glyphosate a “probable human carcinogen.” In an earlier blog, we discussed that trace levels of glyphosate have even been found in beer and wine.

We have created an informative infographic on things to know about Roundup.

Previous Judgements

Right now, thousands of additional lawsuits against both Monsanto and Roundup are pending in state and federal court systems. Two earlier verdicts have reinforced the claims of many cancer patients who claim Roundup Weed Killer caused their sickness. These include:

  • August 2018: A San Francisco jury awarded $78 million to a groundskeeper—finding Roundup caused Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and setting a legal precedent.
  • March 2019: A federal jury awarded $80 million to a man claiming Roundup caused his Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Read more in a blog published here.

  • My orthopedic doctor recommended Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, to me following the need for revision hip surgery due to a hip from Stryker that was putting poison into my system. The doctor took care of the hip, and Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, took care of the legal case. They were very thorough, professional, courteous, and always ready to answer the questions I had throughout the length of the case. In a word, the entire office is fantastic. I’m sure they were tired of my inquiries on the case’s progress, but they did not show it. They were always willing to respond and were very positive. If I ever have a claim in the future, they will be the first group to whom I reach out.
