Attorney Chad McLain of Graves McLain visited KTUL’s Good Day Tulsa on Thursday, March 14th in recognition of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. He presented his insights regarding the risks, frequency, and causes of Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs).

Facts About Traumatic Brain Injuries

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines a Traumatic Brain Injury as any bump, blow, jolt, or penetrating injury to the head which causes a disruption in normal brain function. According to the Mayo Clinic, common causes of TBI can include:

  • Household/Workplace Falls
  • Vehicle/Pedestrian Collisions
  • Serious Acts of Violence
  • Sports-Related Injuries

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of a concussion or other potential TBI may not appear immediately after the initial injury. Always seek professional medical assistance if you or your loved one experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty Thinking
  • Difficulty Concentrating
  • Unusual Headache
  • Blurred Vision
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Light/Noise Sensitivity
  • Unusual Sleep Habits

If you feel drowsy, have trouble waking, or experience any weakness or numbness, seek medical attention as quickly as possible. Accident victims should seek immediate medical assistance if they lose consciousness, exhibit slurred speech or pupil dilation, cannot recognize people or places, experience convulsions or seizures, become agitated easily, or exhibit other unusual behavior.

Tips for Prevention

To help protect against Traumatic Brain Injuries, observe the following safety tips:

  • Always wear a helmet while engaging in physical sports or bicycling.
  • Always use properly installed, age-appropriate child seats in vehicles.
  • Use safety gates stairs to prevent infants and toddlers from falling.
  • Make sure all passengers wear their seat belts while in any vehicle.
  • Never operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • My orthopedic doctor recommended Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, to me following the need for revision hip surgery due to a hip from Stryker that was putting poison into my system. The doctor took care of the hip, and Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, took care of the legal case. They were very thorough, professional, courteous, and always ready to answer the questions I had throughout the length of the case. In a word, the entire office is fantastic. I’m sure they were tired of my inquiries on the case’s progress, but they did not show it. They were always willing to respond and were very positive. If I ever have a claim in the future, they will be the first group to whom I reach out.
