What is Distracted Driving?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from the road. These activities include texting on a phone, talking to other passengers, eating or drinking, and manipulating devices. Distractions fall into three categories:

  • Visual Distractions take the driver’s eyes off the road.
  • Manual Distractions take the driver’s hands off the wheel.
  • Cognitive Distractions take the driver’s mind off the task.

Distracted Driving Statistics

In the U.S. nine people are killed—and 1,000 injured—in crashes involving a distracted driver each day. One out of four accidents is caused by texting while driving, which is six times more likely to cause accidents than driving drunk. During 2015, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 391,000 injuries and over 3,400 deaths due to distracted driving.

Tips to Avoid Distracted Driving

Accidents and injuries caused by distracted driving are ultimately preventable. The following tips can help ensure you make it to your destination safely:

  • Never Use Your Phone While Driving
  • Avoid Multitasking in a Vehicle
  • Don’t Drive While Drowsy
  • Limit the Number of Passengers

Penalties for Distracted Driving

In November 2015, Oklahoma outlawed texting while driving. Law enforcement officers can stop drivers they observe texting and issue a fine of $100. Some texting or cellphone use violations may also result in reckless driving charges. In circumstances where a violation results in the death of another person, a driver could face charges of vehicular homicide.
