Practice Areas: Wrongful Death, Medical Malpractice

Thinking about getting a tattoo?  Well, you might want to think again. While tattoos are popular in all age groups and demographics these days, “getting inked” is something one should put a lot of thought into, specifically because tattoos can introduce medical issues that were not present prior to getting tattooed.

Just because there are a lot of people tattooed out there doesn’t mean it is safe. You should beware, as there may be associated health risks to getting tattooed.

As of August 7th, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed bacterial contamination in unopened bottles of inks and on needles included in tattoo kits marketed and distributed by White and Blue Lion, Inc.  White and Blue Lion, Inc. products have been recalled and all vendors using such products should dispose of them immediately.

According to Linda Katz, M.D., M.P.H., director of FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors, using these inks for tattoos can cause infection.  “Tattooing poses a risk of infection to anyone, but the risk is particularly high for those with pre-existing heart or circulatory disease, diabetes, or compromised immune systems.

The Product Liability lawyers at Graves McLain are experienced in representing individuals who have been affected by faulty products and who have suffered poor health due to adverse reactions to over-the-counter products, such as inks and needles found in tattoo kits.

Tattoo infections can be localized; causing severe irritation and scarring to surrounding areas, however, if the infection is left untreated it can spread through the bloodstream, a process known as sepsis.  These infections may be associated with fever, shaking, and sweats.

If these symptoms arise, treatment with antibiotics, hospitalization and/or surgery may be required.

Graves McLain would like to suggest that anyone who is looking to be tattooed to examine the ink bottles and determine whether the ink and needles are part of the recalled White and Blue Lion, Inc. product line.

  • My orthopedic doctor recommended Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, to me following the need for revision hip surgery due to a hip from Stryker that was putting poison into my system. The doctor took care of the hip, and Graves McLain Injury Lawyers, PLLC, took care of the legal case. They were very thorough, professional, courteous, and always ready to answer the questions I had throughout the length of the case. In a word, the entire office is fantastic. I’m sure they were tired of my inquiries on the case’s progress, but they did not show it. They were always willing to respond and were very positive. If I ever have a claim in the future, they will be the first group to whom I reach out.
