The communities of Bethany, Oklahoma, and Gainesville, Texas are mourning today after a deadly tractor-trailer accident occurred late Friday night in Davis, Oklahoma. A truck driving northbound on Interstate 35 veered across the median and crashed into a bus carrying 15 students from the North Central Texas College women’s softball team.
Three of the softball players died at the scene and a fourth died at a hospital near Sulpher, Oklahoma.
Several other players, including the coach driving the bus, were treated at the scene for minor injuries suffered.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Captain Ronnie Hampton claimed the truck driver was distracted by something in the cab but declined to mention what the distraction was. The truck driver escaped injuries and currently, there are no charges pending against him.
The Highway Patrol will turn over the results of its investigation to the local district attorney, who will decide whether to pursue criminal charges.
